First in Italy: normothermic liver perfusion
Early 2016, a successful normothermic liver perfusion and subsequent transplantation was performed at the University of Pisa Medical School Hospital ( Italy), using the Liver Assist device.
This new technique was introduced by the General Surgery and Liver Transplantation Unit and is part of the Department of Liver Transplantation, Hepatology and Infectious Disease chaired by Prof Franco Filipponi. Surgeons Davide Ghinolfi and Daniele Pezzati, in collaboration with doctors Emanuele Balzano, Laura Coletti and Paolo De Simone, successfully performed the surgery, the first ever made in Italy!
